KNX vs Loxone —
which system
for your villa?

Two of the most common platforms we install in Limassol villas. Both are professional-grade wired systems. The right choice depends on your property size, build stage and priorities.

KNX vs Loxone —
side by side.

TOPIC
KNX
LOXONE
Architecture
Decentralised bus — each device connects directly to the bus. No single point of failure.
Centralised Miniserver — all logic runs on one controller. Simpler wiring, single point of failure.
Cable
Dedicated KNX bus cable (YCYM 2x2x0.8) plus power cabling for actuators.
Standard Cat6 to all devices. Fewer cable types, easier to source on site.
Commissioning
ETS software — industry standard, steeper learning curve. Every device manually addressed.
Loxone Config software — faster to set up, more visual. Typical villa in 2-3 days.
App quality
No native KNX app — depends on visualisation software (iRidium, etc). Additional cost and complexity.
Native Loxone app — clean, reliable, works well. Included in system cost.
Manufacturer independence
500+ certified manufacturers. Any KNX installer worldwide can service the system.
Single manufacturer. Only Loxone-certified installers can fully configure the system.
Expandability
Unlimited — add any certified device from any manufacturer at any time.
Good — Loxone ecosystem is comprehensive. Limited to Loxone hardware.
Cost
Higher — more components, more installation time. Justified for 300sqm+.
Lower for equivalent functionality. Better value for 150-300sqm villas.
Best for
Large new builds 300sqm+, properties requiring long-term manufacturer independence.
Mid-size villas 150-300sqm where fast commissioning and good app experience are priorities.

For most villas in Limassol under 300sqm, Loxone delivers better value and a better day-to-day experience. For larger properties or where long-term independence from a single manufacturer matters, KNX is the right choice.

Common questions.

Can KNX and Loxone work together?

Yes. A KNX/Loxone gateway allows Loxone to control KNX devices. Some installations use KNX for lighting bus and Loxone as the logic controller.

Which is more reliable?

KNX is inherently more resilient — decentralised architecture means no single component failure takes down the system. Loxone with a backup Miniserver approaches the same level.

Which has the better app?

Loxone — the native app is consistently rated higher by end users. KNX app quality depends on which visualisation software is added.

Can either system be retrofitted?

Both require new cabling — neither is truly wireless. For retrofit without cabling, Home Assistant with ZigBee devices is a better option.

Not sure which
system is right?

We install both KNX and Loxone regularly in Limassol. We will recommend based on your specific property — not on what we happen to have in stock.
