What is KNX?
KNX is an international standard (ISO/IEC 14543) for building automation. It uses a dedicated two-wire bus to connect lighting, climate, blinds and other building systems. Over 500 manufacturers produce certified KNX devices that all work together.
When should KNX be specified?
KNX is typically specified for properties over 300sqm where long-term flexibility and manufacturer independence are priorities. For smaller villas, Loxone often delivers better value. We advise based on your specific project.
Can KNX be retrofitted?
KNX requires a dedicated bus cable (YCYM 2x2x0.8) run to every device. This makes true retrofit difficult without significant building work. For finished properties, Home Assistant with ZigBee devices is usually a better solution.
What is DALI and how does it work with KNX?
DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) is a protocol for controlling individual luminaires. A KNX/DALI gateway connects the two buses — every DALI fixture is individually addressable from the KNX system. Standard on premium villa lighting installations in Limassol.
How long does a KNX installation take?
A typical 400sqm villa — 4-5 weeks for installation including cabling, panel build and commissioning. ETS programming takes 3-5 days depending on complexity. We provide a full project programme at design stage.
Can KNX integrate with Ajax alarm and CCTV?
Yes. KNX integrates with Ajax via gateway. CCTV events (motion detection, door bell) can trigger KNX scenes. Access control events open the gate and trigger arrival/departure scenes.
